Timber Maintenance & Repair Recoating & Resanding Timber Floors
The term re-coating refers to lightly sanding the existing coating followed by the application of an additional layer of protective clear coating. Re-coating a floor does not involve sanding the timber, only the existing coating is abraded with a fine sandpaper to prepare for the new coating.
SRT, the scratch resistant factory coating applied some of our products, has been specifically formulated with the ability to be re-coated using approved solvent based or water based floor coatings. The following steps should be observed when re-coating SRT floors, to maximise results.
Use only Approved Coatings
Premium Gold Floor Finish, Premium Satin Finish, Polycure M1045 Super Gloss and Polycure Aquapro are just some of the approved finishes that can be used to re-coat ReadyFlor. Polycure M1012, M1013 and M1014 should not be used to re-coat ReadyFlor. For best results, use Premium Aqua Gold Water Based coating, available in a range of gloss levels. If you are interested in using a different coating, please check with your local Floorscape Office prior to application.
Ensure Abrasion
Prior to the application of your new coating, the existing coating needs to be lightly sanded. Use a worn 120 grit or 150 grit abrasive or sandscreen and sand until a uniform film of fine white “sanding powder” is achieved across the floor. Vacuum thoroughly before proceeding to the next step.
Wipe Well
Particularly with older floors, we recommend that the floor be well wiped using Premium Solvent and a clean, lint-free, white cloth. This process will help to remove any contamination on the floor that may affect the bond of the new coating. It is important to allow the solvent to thoroughly dry prior to the application of the new coating. Two to three hours, weather dependant, should be allowed for the solvent to completely dry. Remember to wipe off any excess solvent left on the floor after wiping using a clean, white, lint-free cloth.
Consider a Professional
The use of an experienced floorsander is an option worth considering when re-coating ReadyFlor.
Re-coating ReadyFlor, or any timber floor, every few years is part of maintaining your timber floor and in doing so will help to ensure that your floor continues to look its’ very best. In many cases, a simple re-coat can restore a tired looking floor to an almost new condition. Not only that but regular re-coating ensures that your floor is protected against day to day wear and tear, a real feature of timber flooring.
Re-sanding Quick-Step ReadyFlor
Re-sanding refers to the sanding of all existing coating from a timber floor and applying three fresh coats of clear finish. The need for re-sanding arises when part of a floor has worn through to bare timber, usually evidenced by discolouration of the timber in that area. This discolouration occurs as the coating protecting the floor has been worn off and the timber is left exposed to the elements, particularly water or moisture. ReadyFlor can be re-sanded as many times as a solid, traditional timber floor. In most cases, the re-sanding process calls for large belt sanders, edging machines and large sanding polishers to be used, often requiring a professional floorsander. ReadyFlor, once re-sanded can be coated with a large variety of approved single pack coatings covering solvent based, oil based and water based products. If you are considering re-sanding your ReadyFlor yourself, we offer the following recommendations:
Use a Belt not a Drum
Owing to the fact that Readyflor is a floating floor, we recommend the use of a large professional belt floorsander, not a drum sander, to achieve best results.
Only Use Approved Coatings
Premium Gold Floor Finish, Premium Satin Finish, Premium Oil Finish, Premium Timber Seal, Polycure M1045 Super Gloss and Polycure Aquapro are among the more popular approved finishes. We recommend that you contact your local Floorscape Office for advice prior to using any coating not listed above.
